Legislative Issues
It is important for school nurses to be aware of Legislative issues that may affect their job as a school nurse, their place of employment (health departments or schools) or their students. It is the goal of the Legislative Committee to inform school nurses of these issues. If, after reviewing the issues, a concern is raised, then, as a voter, school nurses have the opportunity, as private citizens, to contact their legislators and tell them of their concerns.
Legislators listen to the concerns of their constituents. Nurses have long be considered the most trusted profession. When nurses raise a concern, legislators will pause to listen. Let your voice be heard. To find your legislator by zip code, go to www.myFlorida.com/. On the lower right side of the screen is an area labeled, “Find Your Legislator.”
FASN will not tell school nurses how to vote. There are times our members must agree to disagree. FASN will try to give school nurses the facts so they can make their own decisions on the issues.
Occasionally, FASN may join with others who care about children’s health issues and write a “position paper” which gives FASN’s beliefs on certain issues. The attached pdf is a position paper on school health funding. Please consider reading it.
If you agree, please take the time to contact your local legislators with your concerns. Your can even print out the position paper to send along with your own comments.
Remember, your voice does make a difference!
