Latest NewsOne way of highlighting our research and best practices is through a poster presentation. Dr. Shirley Gordon, Dr. Charlotte Barry, Barbara Smith, Dr. Rhonda Lesniak, Dr. Carole Kain and Sandra Tauro, all FASN members, have presented posters at our national conferences. To learn how to create a poster of your own, read Fran Oppedisanno's article, "You Want Me To Do a What??" in the June 2008 edition of The FASNating News Research in PrintAs a result of their research, Dr.’s Shirley Gordon and Charlotte Barry have been published in the October 2009 issue of the Journal of School Nursing. Their article is titled: “Delegation guided by school nursing values: comprehensive knowledge, trust, and empowerment.” Current ResearchSeveral school nurses became involved in research on Bell’s Palsy at the 2010 State FASN Conference. Those who chose to continue have been part of the second phase of the research. If you are interested, contact Dr. Shirley Gordon, PhD. at sgordon@fau.edu.Dr. Rhonda Lesniak, PhD. has received funding from NASN to continue her research into students who cut themselves. If you are involved in a research project and would like to involve other school nurses, contact Past-president@FASN.net to make contact with other School nurses. Due to widespread interest from members for research networking, NASN has expanded the Doctoral and Master's Student's List to the NASN Research Discussion List. The list is for NASN members and provides a network for school nurses interested in research, including school health office nurses, supervisors, university and non-profit agency researchers, Doctoral and Masters students. The list provides feedback, support and direction from peers and school nurse leaders and connects potential research partners. They are working to capture the data that shows the value of a public health model of school nursing. Read the article by Karen Capps in the June 2008 edition of The FASNating News Research Initiative (FSNRI)The Florida School Nurse Research Initiative (FSNRI) has been developed as the outcome of the Delphi Process research project many of you participated in. Over 50% of the participlants identified research as a role of the school nurse; the comfort level to participate in research was significant and the five most frequently identified topics were obesity, the role of the school nurse, legal/ethical issues, school emergencies and health education. The FSNRI is designed to provide education, networking, and organizational support to nurture statewide research groups made up of practicing school nurses, and research mentors from the university setting. It is expected that as a result of the initiative, statewide multi-site research studies will be conducted focused on the priority topics. The goals of FSNRI are: a. Establish a research agenda for school nurses in Florida b. Develop a systematic structure to nurture the participation of school nurses in the research process c. Development of research partnerships d. Conduct multi-site research studies organized around identified topics of interest e. Support the state goals for health children/schools |
