August 2016 Hopefully, this finds you all well and rested. I must say it has been a very busy summer for a good many of us. I wanted ADVOCAY to be a key focus for FASN during my tenure. Wow, I had no idea the stars would align and opportunities for FASN visibility would occur. I want to make it clear, when I speak of FASN; I'm speaking of and for school nurses within the state of Florida! You know when you find that special gem that you so want to share with others, that is how I feel about FASN. FASN is an organization that works on so many levels to promote, advocate, and support school nurses across the state of Florida. We are currently working to ...

June 2016 Greetings all, FASN leaders and members are working it with social media. If you haven't jumped on the band wagon, now is the time to do so! We are tweeting, blogging, communicating via SNN, and utilizing the FASN website. Lisa Kern our affiliate director will be tweeting from national conference. Check her tweets at Lkern12. There are position statements up for revision and approval. The BOD will consider a new definition of school nursing that is grounded in the Framework for 21st Century School Nurse Practice Act. If you're not sure what the Framework for the 21st Century School Nurse Practice Act is, check it out on NASN. Advocacy, ...

May 2016 Wow, May has arrived along with our Florida humidity. You still have time before the real heat hits to get outside and enjoy the wonders Florida has to offer. How many of you know of a county park and/or state park within your area? You might be surprised once you start looking. I've seen recent pictures on Facebook that included school nurses and their spouses out and about hiking, running marathons, and fishing, what a great way to relax and replenish your spirit. We've been encouraging our members for the last 2 months to get on-line, take a look at your FASN website and School Nurse Net. If you haven't done so, I challenge you, Just Do It! We ...

April 2016 Your FASN board continues to work on behalf of its members. Our March meeting was a wrap for the 2016 annual conference, with conference chairs Janie and Marcy reporting. Trust me, when I tell you that every review is evaluated by your conference chairs, it's the truth. Your conference chairs and board are very committed to provide a conference that meets the needs of the majority. Every conference detail is evaluated with regard to member satisfaction and cost effectiveness. It is impressive to see the commitment by those behind the scenes. I would continue to encourage our members to check the website and SNN on a weekly basis. Lots of good ...

March 2, 2016, Well, this is my first ever blog. I am so excited about all the things happening within FASN. I hope our members will take a look at our FASN website and School Nurse Net and browse through. Keep in mind; this will be an on-going process. We aim to keep things moving and updated. We would love to have feedback from our members. Our communications chair and committee have been working diligently these last few weeks. Your FASN website and School Nurse Net are prime examples. Communication within our organization is important to its success. Look for some teamwork between communications and advocacy; we have some dynamite members on board. ...

On Saturday, February 6th [2016] at the annual FASN conference I had the privilege of being installed as your president. I wanted to share my acceptance speech with those of you who could not attend. My message: "I can do things you cannot, you can do things I cannot; together we can do great things." ― Mother Teresa I'm delighted and most excited to serve as your next FASN president. FASN is your organization! Eleven years ago, I sat in awe as I listened and studied the women I so admired as FASN leaders. I knew early on, this was the organization that would help me to be a more credible, educated, and vibrant school nurse. You know when you ...

May 2016 Happy School Nurse Day May 11, 2016! School nursing is an autonomous discipline creating many opportunities for diversity in practice focus. As school nurses identify areas of need in the communities they serve, they are tasked with finding creative, collaborative ways to make health services available to students and families. As an example of this diversity, we can look at the intensive outreach services provided by school nurses in Pasco County, Florida (my home!). School nurses there have applied the problem solving process to establish partnerships within their communities in order to improve students' access to healthcare. Here are some ...

March 2016 I am privileged and honored to represent Florida school nurses as your NASN Affiliate Director. I was so pleased to see so many of you at our state conference a few weeks ago! A robust membership is vitally important to the work that we do in support of one another across the state. THANK YOU for your continued support of FASN! If you work with other school nurses who are thinking about joining, please take some time to explain the benefits of membership and encourage them to join! Here's 2 important items from NASN: Federal legislation in support of school nurses has been brought forward during this legislative session . Be sure to ...

School nurses across the state gathered this past weekend in Orlando for the 21st FASN conference. The conference had its highest attendance ever, with 160 school nurses participating. The conference provided school nurses an opportunity to earn continuing education credits, enhanced time with vendors, and multiple opportunities for networking. I personally loved the announcement of our 2017 School Nurse of the Year, Margaret Polk. Her credentials speak volumes with regard to her professional and personal life. Margaret was featured on Bay News 9 and will be presented at the State Board of Education meeting on February 16th. Congratulations, Margaret! ...
