Hi Florida school nurses!

We know this is a busy time for all of you but we wanted to share some important advocacy information with all (please excuse cross-posting!):

The Florida Association of School Nurses is excited to announce that Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-FL 24) has introduced HR 8220, The One School, One Nurse Act  intended to fund a new school nurse grant program through HHS. The bill has been referred to the House Education and Labor Committee and Energy and Commerce Committee (6/23).

This legislation would fund a grant program that would support a full-time registered nurse on every elementary and secondary campus. The funding would be used to recruit, hire and retain school nurses according to established school-nurse-to-student ratios. Specific details are still forthcoming.

The act states that "School nurses play a critical role in helping to manage the chronic physical, emotional, mental, and social health needs of students, conduct health screenings, facilitate vaccinations and immunization compliance efforts, reduce burdens on educators and other school staff, and support a positive and healthy school climate." All of you reading this can certainly agree!

This is exciting news for all of us in Florida. Be sure to check back for more information as updates becomes available! We will need your help to reach out to your congressional representatives and ask for their support.

Also - be sure to join us for our 27th annual conference - IN PERSON - October 14/15 in Wesley Chapel/Tampa!
